RRBs: 'Controlling Office' Renamed 'Regional Office'

No longer current — replaced by RRBs: Enhanced KYC/AML Checks for High-Risk Jurisdictions
Source: Reserve Bank of India · RBI/2008-09/504 · issued 18 Jun 2009 · ~1 min read
Quick answerRBI has clarified that RRBs can rename their 'Controlling Offices' and 'Area Offices' as 'Regional Offices'. This replaces the terms 'Controlling Offices/Area Offices' in paragraphs 2 and 2.3 of the Master Circular on Branch Licensing for RRBs, as per the circular dated June 18, 2009.

What changed

RBI clarified that 'Controlling Office' includes 'Area Office' for RRBs. Both can now be referred to as 'Regional Office' in paragraphs 2 and 2.3 of the Master Circular on Branch Licensing for RRBs.

What it means for you

This simplifies branch licensing terminology for RRBs, aligning it with standard banking nomenclature. Banks can now uniformly use 'Regional Office' for administrative oversight, reducing confusion in regulatory compliance.

Historical instruction — do not use for current compliance. This is what was required at the time; it no longer reflects current RBI requirements. If no replacement rule is linked above, that only means none is recorded on our register yet — it does not prove no later applicable rule exists. Confirm on the official RBI source below.
