RBI Introduces Branch Info Return for NBFCs

No longer current — withdrawn, no replacement on file yet
Source: Reserve Bank of India · RBI/2013-14/219 · issued 03 Sep 2013 · ~1 min read
Quick answerRBI mandates all deposit-taking NBFCs and non-deposit NBFCs with assets over ₹50 crore to file a new 'Branch Info' return capturing branch details like address, opening, and closure dates. Initial filing within one month from September 3, 2013, for branches as on June 30, 2013, then quarterly updates within 10 days of calendar quarter-end (March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31).

What changed

RBI introduced a new 'Branch Info' return to capture branch network data of NBFCs, which was previously not reported. Deposit-taking NBFCs no longer need to include branch details in NBS-1 from September 2013 onwards. The return must be submitted online via the COSMOS portal.

What it means for you

NBFCs must now systematically report branch-level data, enabling RBI to monitor geographical spread and reach. This increases compliance burden but provides RBI with granular data for supervision. Lenders should ensure accurate and timely submission to avoid regulatory issues.

Historical instruction — do not use for current compliance. This is what was required at the time; it no longer reflects current RBI requirements. If no replacement rule is linked above, that only means none is recorded on our register yet — it does not prove no later applicable rule exists. Confirm on the official RBI source below.
