Bank holidays by month

The rules every bank follows

Sundays. Every Sunday is a bank holiday.
Second and fourth Saturdays. Banks close on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
Other Saturdays. The first, third and fifth Saturdays are full working days.
Where the Saturday rule comes from. A Government of India order of 20 August 2015, in force from 1 September 2015. Reserve Bank press release ↗
Saturday closures left in 2026: 24 Oct, 14 Nov, 28 Nov, 12 Dec, 26 Dec.
Five-day week. Banks and unions agreed in 2024 to close every Saturday. The Government has not approved it yet.
So the old rule stands. Second and fourth Saturdays only. We check this every day.
State holidays. Each state government declares its own list under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
The Reserve Bank collects the lists. It publishes them office by office. That is the list on this page.
1 April. Banks close their yearly accounts. In most states there are no public dealings that day.
Money still moves on a holiday. UPI, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS work every day of the year.
So do ATMs, cards and net banking. Only branch work stops.
The Reserve Bank's word on it. RTGS runs all day, every day ↗. So does NEFT ↗.
What stops on a holiday. Branches are shut. Cheques are not cleared. No cash at the counter.

Questions people ask

Is today a bank holiday?

Choose your state at the top of this page. The first card then says if banks are open or closed today. It also names the next holiday.

Which bank holidays apply in every state of India in 2026?

4 days close banks in every state in 2026. They are Republic Day (26 Jan), Independence Day (15 Aug), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct), Christmas (25 Dec). Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays are closed everywhere too.

Why does my state's list differ from my friend's?

Each state government declares its own list under the Negotiable Instruments Act. A festival can be a holiday in one state and a working day next door.

Does a bank holiday stop my UPI or NEFT payment?

No. UPI, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS work on every day of the year. Only branch work stops, such as cheque clearing and cash at the counter.

Is the five-day banking week in force?

No. Banks and unions agreed to it in 2024. The Government of India has not approved it as of the date on this page. The second and fourth Saturday rule stands.

Where does BankPulse get these dates?

From the Reserve Bank of India holiday page, read by a machine every morning. Each date is then compared with HDFC Bank's list and SBI's calendar.

What if a festival date changes, such as Eid?

The state government issues a new order and the Reserve Bank updates its page. Our daily check sees the change and records it on this page. The page is rebuilt the same day.
