28 August: banks handed RBI Rs 1.52 lakh crore, the fifth auction this week. The price held steady.
Every fact links to its official source.
Banks gave RBI Rs 1,52,537 crore today - more than any day this week, still at 5.24%
Today, Friday 28 August, RBI offered to take Rs 3,00,000 crore of banks' spare cash for 3 days. Banks gave Rs 1,52,537 crore - 51 paise of every rupee asked. Cut-off rate: 5.24%.
VRRR in plain words: RBI holds a bank's spare cash for a few days and pays interest. Banks bid the rate they want. RBI does this when too much cash floats in the system.
The week's pattern: Monday, banks gave 35% of the Rs 4,00,000 crore RBI asked for. Tuesday, 56% of Rs 1,75,000 crore. Thursday overnight, 71% of Rs 2,00,000 crore. Today, 51% of the biggest ask of the week.
One number refuses to move: every auction this week cleared at exactly 5.24% - one paisa below the repo rate of 5.25%, far above RBI's 5.00% floor. Banks give RBI more cash each day, but never cheaper.
Why it matters: Short-term money stays priced at the top of RBI's rate corridor. And a bank comfortable holding cash competes less hard for fresh deposits - watch your own bank's deposit rate card before promising a customer anything.

RBI froze two co-operative banks on the same day
By directions dated 25 August, effective close of business 27 August, RBI put two co-operative banks under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act - the power RBI uses to stop a weak bank's operations to protect depositors. Desaiganj Nagari Cooperative Bank, Desaiganj: no withdrawals at all, citing the bank's liquidity position. The Citizens Co-operative Bank, Jammu: withdrawals capped at Rs 1,25,000 per depositor. Neither bank may give new loans, take fresh deposits or sell assets without RBI's written approval. RBI press release, directions on Desaiganj Nagari Cooperative Bank, 27 Aug 2026 ↗
FCNR(B): 3 days left, and RBI just removed a speed bump
The special window for banks to raise FCNR(B) deposits - foreign currency fixed deposits from NRIs - shuts on Monday 31 August. RBI's last published tally: 72.85 billion dollars raised by 21 August, of which 65.40 billion dollars is FCNR(B). On 27 August, Business Standard reported RBI now lets banks swap inflows above 100 million dollars the same day, instead of waiting for their one fixed day a week. The swap facility stays open till 11 September for money already raised. Business Standard, 27 Aug 2026, on RBI's same-day swap access rule ↗
Rs 50,000 penalty on Jalna DCC Bank - two small failures, one fine
By order dated 25 August, RBI fined Jalna District Central Co-operative Bank, Maharashtra, Rs 50,000 for two failures: not reporting borrowers' credit information to all credit information companies (CICs), and not reviewing the risk category of customer accounts at least once every six months, as KYC rules require. Both are routine desk-level tasks. If your branch handles CIC reporting or KYC reviews, this order is the checklist. At Jackson Hole, Rajan tells the Fed: you should already have raised rates
Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, at the Jackson Hole central bankers' conference, said the US Federal Reserve 'should be raising rates or should have raised rates already', adding he would be 'more hawkish than where the Fed is right now' because financial conditions are not restrictive. Rajan leads one of five taskforces set up by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to review how the Fed makes policy. Markets price a possible December rise. A hawkish Fed reaches Indian desks through the rupee and dollar funding costs. Business Standard, 28 Aug 2026, Rajan at Jackson Hole ↗

Friday career path: the desk RBI spoke to five times this week
Every big story this week ran through one desk - treasury. The VRRR bids, the FCNR(B) swaps, the bond auctions: all treasury calls. If you work in a branch and want a wider path, start here: ask your treasury for the daily rate card, and learn why your bank bid - or did not bid - this week. A branch banker who can read the money market is rare. RBI press release, 3-day VRRR result, 28 Aug 2026 ↗
The watchlist
Looking back: First, the record put straight: our last brief was Tuesday 25 August. The editions for 26 and 27 August did not go out - our production system failed on both days. Nothing was sent in their place. Now, Tuesday's promises. One: would banks take a bigger share of a smaller VRRR offer? They did - 56% on Tuesday against 35% on Monday. Two: the final FCNR(B) number - not out yet; the window shuts Monday. Three: would more co-operative bank action follow? It did - the Jalna penalty and full directions on two more co-op banks, though for different rule breaches than the NPA-and-director-loans pattern we flagged.
Watch next: Watch three things. One: the final FCNR(B) tally after the window shuts Monday 31 August. Two: Monday's liquidity - Rs 1,52,537 crore returns from today's VRRR the same day; see if RBI announces another auction on top. Three: whether RBI eases, extends or adds to the directions on the two frozen co-operative banks.
