Daily Brief · Edition 13 · 29 August 2026

29 August: on 31 August, three RBI moves land — money returns, FCNR(B) shuts, Rs 6 lakh crore locks 15 days.

Every fact links to its official source.

RBI's biggest cash call of the cycle: Rs 6,00,000 crore, locked for 15 days, Monday morning

On Friday evening RBI announced a 15-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction for Monday 31 August: notified amount Rs 6,00,000 crore, bidding window 9:30 to 10:00 am, money returned on 15 September.

The jump is in both size and length. Monday 25 August's ask was Rs 4,00,000 crore. Friday's was Rs 3,00,000 crore for 3 days. This one is Rs 6,00,000 crore for 15 days - the largest amount and the longest lock RBI has offered this month.

VRRR in plain words: RBI takes a bank's spare cash for a fixed period and pays interest; banks bid the rate. Every auction this week cleared at 5.24% - one paisa below the repo rate of 5.25%.

Why Monday: Rs 1,52,537 crore from Friday's 3-day auction returns to banks that morning, and the special FCNR(B) deposit window - 72.85 billion dollars raised at last count - shuts the same day. RBI is moving before the cash pile grows again.

Behind the flood, RBI's own dollar buying: forex reserves hit a record 729.33 billion dollars, up 12.42 billion in the week to 21 August. When RBI buys dollars it pays out rupees - rupees that land in this same surplus.

Why it matters: If you sit in treasury, Monday 9:30 to 10:00 am is the window to place two weeks of cash - and whether 5.24% finally cracks on a 15-day tenor is the week's biggest signal. If you sit in a branch, a banking system this flush keeps competing softly for deposits - check your bank's deposit card before quoting a rate.

Third co-operative bank frozen in 48 hours: Ashok Sahakari Bank, Ahmednagar

By directions effective close of business 28 August, RBI put Ashok Sahakari Bank Ltd., Ahmednagar under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act - the power RBI uses to stop a weak bank's operations to protect depositors. No withdrawals at all, no new loans, no fresh deposits, no payments without RBI's written approval, for six months. Depositors are covered by DICGC insurance up to Rs 5,00,000. This follows the same-day freezes on Desaiganj Nagari Cooperative Bank and The Citizens Co-operative Bank, Jammu on Thursday - three banks in two days. Government to buy back Rs 30,000 crore of its own bonds on 3 September

Announced Friday: a buyback auction of four government securities maturing in 2026-27, ceiling Rs 30,000 crore, on RBI's E-Kuber platform, 10:30 to 11:30 am, 3 September. A buyback means the government purchases its own bonds before maturity - one more tool to manage a system where RBI ran 21 cash-absorbing VRRR auctions in August alone. New Fed chief's first Jackson Hole speech: stubborn inflation may need rate RISES

On Friday, Kevin Warsh gave his first Jackson Hole speech as US Fed Chair and signalled that stubborn inflation may require rate hikes, per PBS. US inflation runs at 3.4% against the Fed's 2% goal; the Fed rate stands at 3.50-3.75%; and markets priced roughly one-in-three odds of a rise at the 16 September meeting. Yesterday we carried Raghuram Rajan saying the Fed should already have raised - the chair now leans the same way. A rising-rate Fed reaches Indian desks through the rupee and dollar funding costs. The watchlist

Looking back: Friday's brief promised three things. One: the final FCNR(B) tally - still not out; the window shuts Monday 31 August. Two: whether RBI would announce another auction on top of Monday's Rs 1.52 lakh crore return - it did, and bigger than we guessed: Rs 6,00,000 crore for 15 days, the largest and longest of the cycle. Three: whether RBI would ease or add to the co-operative bank directions - it added: a third bank, Ashok Sahakari of Ahmednagar, frozen Friday.

Watch next: Watch three things. One: Monday's 15-day VRRR result - how much of Rs 6,00,000 crore banks hand over, and whether the unmoving 5.24% finally shifts on a longer lock. Two: the final FCNR(B) number once the window shuts Monday. Three: the Rs 30,000 crore bond buyback result on 3 September.
