Correction: the bond buyback is Thursday 3 September

Every fact links to its official source.

60-second morning update

Change: A correction to yesterday's brief. We named the wrong day for the government bond buyback. It is Thursday 3 September.

Impact: A desk that read the day name and not the date would have been a day early.

Action: Move it in your diary now. Bids run from 10:30 to 11:30 in the morning.

Change: Yesterday the Reserve Bank of India asked banks for Rs 6,00,000 crore for 15 days.

Impact: Banks offered only Rs 1,34,625 crore. That is 22 paise of every rupee asked.

Action: Treasury desks should read yesterday's shortfall before bidding today.

Change: The Reserve Bank asks for the same Rs 6,00,000 crore again this morning, this time for 7 days.

Impact: Money bid today comes back to banks on 8 September.

Action: Bid between 9:30 and 10:00 in the morning. Bid only spare money.

Change: Two co-operative banks were fined for failures in their customer records.

Impact: Both fines were for paperwork, not for lending. Any bank can be caught the same way.

Action: Compliance should check that customer records reach the central registry on time.

Change: The Reserve Bank published what banks charged and paid in August.

Impact: It shows where your bank sits against the rest of the market.

Action: Treasury and product teams should compare their own rates against it.

What changed: Correction. Yesterday's brief named the wrong day for the government bond buyback. The Reserve Bank's own announcement sets it for Thursday 3 September. The date in yesterday's list of dates was right. The day name beside it was not, and it appeared three times.

Who is affected: Any treasury desk that planned around the day name rather than the date.

What to do: The auction is on Thursday 3 September. Bids run from 10:30 to 11:30 in the morning. Settlement is Friday 4 September. Up to Rs 30,000 crore of face value may be bought back.

Last date: Thursday 3 September 2026.

What changed: Yesterday's 15 day auction fell well short. The Reserve Bank asked for Rs 6,00,000 crore and banks offered Rs 1,34,625 crore. Every rupee offered was taken, at 5.24 per cent.

Who is affected: Treasury desks at every bank that bids in these auctions.

What to do: Read the shortfall before you bid today. On 28 August banks gave 51 paise of every rupee asked, at the same 5.24 per cent. The rate did not move. The appetite did.

Last date: The 15 day money returns to banks on 15 September.

What it means for your job

Treasury: Yesterday banks offered 22 paise of every rupee asked. Today's money is locked for 7 days, until 8 September.

Compliance: One bank was fined for not uploading customer records to the central registry in time. Check your own dates this week.

Credit: The other fine was for not reporting borrower information to all credit information companies. All means all, not one.

Board or Audit: Both fines were for record keeping, not for bad lending. Ask for the last date your bank uploaded customer records.

Banker problem solver

Our records did not reach the central registry on time. What do we do now?

The Reserve Bank fined a bank for exactly this on 25 August. The fine was small. The finding is not.

  1. Find the last date your bank uploaded customer records to the central registry.
  2. Count how many records are late, and by how many days.
  3. Write down why they were late. A supervisor will ask.
  4. Upload the late records now. Do not wait for the next cycle.
  5. Put a monthly check in the compliance calendar, with one named owner.
  6. Report the gap to your audit committee before an inspector finds it.
  7. Keep the proof of upload. That is the evidence you will be asked for.
