4 disrupted banking days ahead: 11 to 14 Sep

Every fact links to its official source.

60-second morning update

Change: Banking may be hit four straight days this week: a nationwide strike on Friday 11 September called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, seven unions together, then the second-Saturday holiday on 12 September, Sunday 13 September, and Ganesh Chaturthi on Monday 14 September, a bank holiday in several states. Outlook Money reported the strike call on 2 September.

Impact: The demands: five-day banking, better performance pay, pension improvements. If talks fail, a three-day strike follows on 28 to 30 September, then an indefinite strike from 26 October.

Action: Treat Thursday 10 September as the week's real closing day. Clear pending work by that evening and tell customers the four dates now.

Change: The Reserve Bank has cleared LIC to raise its holding in ICICI Bank to 9.99 per cent. The approval letter reached LIC at 9:09 PM on Friday 4 September, Business Standard reported on Saturday 5 September. LIC held 4.35 per cent on 30 June.

Impact: Used in full, the approval takes LIC to 14.34 per cent of ICICI Bank. It lapses if the buying is not done within one year.

Action: When customers ask, the rule in one line: crossing shareholding limits in any bank needs RBI's written permission, and the permission expires unused.

Change: Two senior chairs changed on 1 September. RBI approved Carol Furtado as interim chief executive of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank after MD Sanjeev Nautiyal retired early on health grounds. And RBI named Suman Ray, till now regional director for Maharashtra, as Executive Director in charge of deposit insurance.

Impact: Deposit insurance, the fund that protects deposits up to Rs 5 lakh, gets a new head at the Reserve Bank.

Action: Nothing to do. Know the names before your customers read them.

Change: Seven in ten Indian banks now run AI in selective or scaled deployment, says a survey of 40 senior executives across 18 banks and NBFCs, released on 3 September by banking technology firm Zeta. Security and data privacy ranked as the top barrier to going bigger.

Impact: 88 per cent of chief operating officers surveyed said retail lending is where AI already delivers meaningful results.

Action: If you work in retail lending, the machines are already in your workflow. Checking and challenging an AI decision is becoming a core skill.

Reserve Bank of India action board

What changed: RBI has permitted LIC to acquire up to 9.99 per cent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights of ICICI Bank. The approval carries conditions and stands cancelled if not used within one year of the 4 September letter.

Who is affected: Branch and wealth teams at ICICI Bank, and anyone whose customers follow bank shares.

What to do: Explain plainly if asked: this is permission to buy, not a purchase. LIC holds 4.35 per cent today.

What changed: RBI approved Carol Furtado, Executive Director of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, as its interim chief executive by a letter dated 1 September, for three months or until a permanent MD takes charge.

Who is affected: Staff and partners of Ujjivan SFB, and small finance bank watchers.

What to do: Note the supervisory point: RBI approves who runs a bank, even for an interim period.

What changed: Tomorrow, Monday 7 September, is the early-exit date for Sovereign Gold Bond 2021-22 Series VI, five years from issue. RBI fixed the exit price at Rs 15,334 per unit, the three-day average price of 999-purity gold published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. Issue price in 2021: Rs 4,732.

Who is affected: Branch staff and wealth desks.

What to do: Customers exit through the bank, post office or broker where the bond is held. Those who stay keep earning 2.5 per cent a year on the issue price.

Last date: Monday, 7 September 2026.

What it means for your job

Branch: Four dates for the notice board today: strike Friday 11 September, second-Saturday holiday 12 September, Sunday 13 September, Ganesh Chaturthi Monday 14 September in several states. Cash indents and clearing must assume the gap.

Customer service: Gold bond questions peak tomorrow: only SGB 2021-22 Series VI exits on 7 September, at Rs 15,334. Other series wait for their own interest dates.

Compliance: The merchant re-KYC deadline of 15 September is the first working day after the four disrupted days. Field checks not finished by Thursday 10 September may not finish at all.

Technology: In Zeta's survey, 80 per cent of banks already use AI in testing and quality checks, but 61 per cent lack enough labelled training data. Trusting AI is now a data problem.

Treasury: The Rs 7,00,000 crore 30-day cash-absorption window opens Monday 7 September, 9:30 to 10:00 AM on E-Kuber, money back 7 October, early exit allowed. Forex reserves hit a record 740.8 billion dollars on 28 August.

Banker problem solver

Your customers will ask tomorrow: is my money stuck this week?

A four-day service gap from 11 to 14 September is rare. The bankers who answer calmly on Monday 7 September will have planned today, Sunday 6 September.

  1. Give customers the four dates straight: 11, 12, 13 and 14 September, and ask them to finish branch work by Thursday 10 September.
  2. Cheques lodged late in the week may clear only after the gap. Advise customers with due-date payments to pay early, not on 11 September.
  3. Get one written answer from your operations team this week: what happens to salary and pension credits falling on those dates.
  4. Size ATM refills and branch cash indents for 11 to 14 September by Wednesday 9 September, not on the last morning.
  5. The strike is by employees, not payment systems. Confirm with your operations team what stays available digitally, then tell customers that list, no more.

Fraud and risk check

Check today: Four closed days are a fraudster's window: a customer who cannot walk into a branch to check a story will believe an urgent call. Tell customers before 11 September: the bank will not call during the strike asking to move money or share an OTP. Any such call is fraud, whatever the caller ID says.

Career and technology help

This week's reflection: the corner office went to the person who stayed

Carol Furtado has spent nearly three decades in retail banking and NBFCs, staying with Ujjivan through its whole change of shape, from microfinance lender to small finance bank. On 1 September, when the MD's chair fell suddenly empty, RBI approved her to hold it. The question for your own career: are you collecting years, or collecting an institution's whole map? The second is what boards reach for when a chair empties without warning.

One important number

7 in 10

Indian banks running AI in selective or scaled deployment, per Zeta's survey of 40 senior executives across 18 banks and NBFCs, released 3 September. The top barrier to scaling is security and data privacy, not cost.
