HDFC Bank sends two names to RBI for next chief
Every fact links to its official source.
60-second morning update
Change: HDFC Bank's board picked two candidates for its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer and sent both names to RBI for approval, in order of preference, with pay proposals. Sashidhar Jagdishan's second term ends 26 October.
Impact: HDFC Bank is India's largest private bank. Whoever RBI approves will set the bank's lending, hiring and technology plans for the next three years.
Action: Watch for RBI's decision. Approvals usually take a few weeks.
Change: Several news reports, citing sources, say RBI has turned down Tata Sons' request to give up its NBFC licence. RBI classed Tata Sons as a large NBFC in 2022 and gave it three years to list on the stock market. That deadline passed a year ago.
Impact: Tata Sons is India's biggest business group holding company. If forced to list, its shares would trade publicly for the first time in its history.
Action: NBFC teams: this shows RBI is not softening the stock-listing rule for large NBFCs. Check your own company's listing deadline if you work at one.
Change: RBI's Governor launched two new UPI features at the Global Fintech Fest on 12 September. Tap and Pay lets a phone make a contactless payment under Rs 5,000 with no PIN. MyUPI is a new AI help tool with a Safety Switch that stops UPI debits fast if fraud is suspected.
Impact: Once banks turn these on, customers can pay faster and act faster if their account looks compromised.
Action: Payments and technology teams: check when your bank plans to switch these on, and be ready to explain them to customers.
Change: The merchant re-KYC deadline is two days away. Payment companies asked RBI for more time, saying small shopkeepers using QR codes have a verification backlog. As of today, RBI has not granted any extension.
Impact: Industry estimates say 30 to 35 percent of small offline merchants may not finish verification in time, which could stop their QR code from working.
Action: Merchant-facing and payments teams: keep working to 15 September. Tell shopkeeper customers to finish now, not later.
Change: RBI fined Jilla Sahakari Bank, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rs 1.15 lakh on 9 September. The bank did not report borrower credit data to all Credit Information Companies, and did not upload KYC records to the Central KYC Records Registry on time.
Impact: This is the same kind of paperwork gap that has cost other co-operative banks penalties this year.
Action: Compliance and credit teams: check both jobs are done for every account, not just one Credit Information Company.

Banker problem solver
RBI's inspection team asks your co-operative bank about credit reporting and KYC uploads. What do you check first?
RBI just fined Jilla Sahakari Bank Rs 1.15 lakh for exactly this gap: incomplete credit reporting and late KYC uploads.
- Check every new loan account's credit data goes to all 4 Credit Information Companies, not just one.
- Check every customer's KYC record is uploaded to the Central KYC Records Registry within RBI's timeline.
- Run this check every month, not just before the yearly RBI inspection.

Fraud and risk check
Check today: NPCI's new MyUPI tool has a Safety Switch. If a customer thinks their UPI account is compromised, this can stop new debit transactions at once. Tell customers this option now exists.
Career and technology help
This week's growth lesson: succession takes months, not days
HDFC Bank's board spent time preparing two names before sending them to RBI. Note, this is BankPulse's own reading, not the bank's advice: a career move at any level is usually prepared long before the opening appears. This week, write down one skill you would need for your next role.
