Confused about work today? Many bank officers are, right before the 28 September strike
Every fact links to its official source.
60-second morning update
Change: The 3-day nationwide bank strike starts tomorrow, Monday 28 September. Reserve Bank of India told banks they may open today, Sunday 27 September, to help customers first. But officers' group AIBOA has told its members to skip office today, so staff are getting mixed signals.
Impact: Short-staffed branches may mean delays for customers today.
Action: Bank staff: call your branch head now to confirm if you are needed today, not just a forwarded message.
Change: Reserve Bank of India could name HDFC Bank's next MD and CEO within days: outsider Anup Bagchi, MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, or insider Kaizad Bharucha, HDFC Bank's Deputy MD since 2023.
Impact: RBI is checking with the insurance regulator and ICICI Bank's CEO on Bagchi. HDFC Bank wants a tenure rule exception for Bharucha, who hits a 15-year limit in June 2029.
Action: HDFC Bank staff: watch for the official announcement this week.
Change: Reserve Bank of India cancelled the registration of 5 NBFCs this month, and 8 more surrendered their own registration - 13 companies in all. Full names are in today's Reserve Bank action board below.
Impact: These 13 companies can no longer legally run an NBFC business. Any loan, deposit or co-lending link a bank had with them is now void.
Action: Credit and compliance staff: check today if your bank has exposure to any of these 13 names.
Change: The central government paid staff and pensioners their September salary and pension early, on 25 September, ahead of the strike.
Impact: Branches handling government salary accounts had extra pay-day work 5 days early, and should see a quieter true month end.
Action: Payments and branch staff: plan today's and tomorrow's staffing knowing most government salary credits are already done.

Banker problem solver
You are a bank officer. Do you have to go to your branch today, Sunday 27 September?
RBI approved banks opening today for customers before tomorrow's strike. AIBOA told its own members to stay home today, so staff face mixed signals.
- Check your own bank's official circular or intranet notice, not a forwarded message.
- Call your branch head or regional office directly to confirm if your branch is opening today.
- If you are an AIBOA member and unsure, get your union's instruction in writing before deciding not to report.
