RBI's rate panel meets 5-7 October. A hike looks likely for the first time in years

Every fact links to its official source.

Correction, 3 Oct 2026, 7:20 AM IST: The web copy of this brief, on our site from 5:36 AM IST, said RBI has not moved the repo rate since February 2023. That was wrong. February 2023 was the last rise. RBI cut the rate in 2025 and has kept it at 5.25 percent in its last four reviews. The email and Telegram edition was corrected before it was sent at 7:09 AM. 60-second morning update

Change: RBI's rate panel (the MPC) meets 5 to 7 October, and announces its interest rate decision on 7 October.

Impact: RBI last raised the repo rate in February 2023. Most economists expect a rise from 5.25 percent to 5.50 percent.

Action: Branch and loan staff: expect EMI questions this week. Nothing changes before 7 October.

Change: RBI's draft rule would cap a cyber-fraud account freeze at 60 days without a police order. Comments closed yesterday, 2 October.

Impact: Today some accounts stay frozen for months with no fixed deadline. The draft forces banks to explain within 20 days.

Action: Compliance staff: this 60-day limit is coming, not yet law. Expected from 1 April 2027 at the earliest.

Change: IRDAI proposed banning banks from making insurance compulsory with a loan. Comments are open until 25 October.

Impact: Some branches push insurance with a loan without saying it is optional. The draft requires banks to show both rates if a discount is linked to insurance.

Action: Loan staff: tell customers insurance is optional and they may choose their own insurer.

Change: RBI extended curbs on 2 small co-operative banks by 3 months, to 4 January 2027: Industrial Co-operative Bank, Guwahati, and Innovative Co-operative Urban Bank, New Delhi.

Impact: Only these 2 banks' customers face continued withdrawal limits. No other bank is affected.

Action: Tell affected customers the limits continue to 4 January 2027. RBI will review them.

Change: Kotak Mahindra Bank shares rose 4 percent this week after RBI approved Anup Kumar Saha as its next CEO, from January 2027.

Impact: The bank's market value rose about Rs 14,076 crore in a day. Analysts call it good for retail deposits and efficiency.

Action: This closes the CEO question from 1-2 October. Watch Saha's early moves once he starts.

Reserve Bank of India action board

What changed: RBI extended its Directions on The Industrial Co-operative Bank Ltd, Guwahati, for 3 more months, from 4 October 2026 to 4 January 2027. These Directions, in force since July 2025, limit what the bank can do, including customer withdrawals.

Who is affected: Depositors and staff of The Industrial Co-operative Bank Ltd, Guwahati, only.

What to do: Staff at other banks: if a customer asks, say only this one co-operative bank in Guwahati is affected, not banks generally.

What to do: Staff at other banks: tell worried customers this restriction is only on this one Delhi co-operative bank.

Banker problem solver

A customer asks why the bank wants them to buy insurance along with their loan.

IRDAI proposed this week to stop banks forcing insurance with a loan. Comments open until 25 October 2026.

  1. Insurance with a loan is optional unless the customer chooses it for a lower rate.
  2. Under IRDAI's draft, if a lower rate needs insurance, the bank must show the customer both rates, in writing.
  3. Under the draft, the customer may pick any insurer and pay the premium separately, not added to the loan.
